Labor

It is your birthing experience and we honor personal choices, requests and birth plans. We support the ability to eat, drink, move and vocalize as desired, and the freedom to have privacy or invite whomever you choose to be with you during your childbirth. Prepared children are welcome. We encourage an atmosphere that is calm, positive, and nurturing, and one that supports the natural process of labor and birth without unnecessary interference when it is working well. We draw on a wide range of comfort measures and age old midwifery wisdom to prevent and/or handle problems as simply and naturally as possible.

The vast majority of women in our practice labor and give birth at home, but if there is a need to go to the hospital, we come with you. At home, your baby will be born into your arms, will remain with you throughout, and can be examined by your side. We clean up after the birth and stay with you and your baby until several hours postpartum, making sure you both are stable, comfortable and able to breastfeed.

We do a postpartum home visit the next day or two, and then again on day 4-6; and we see you in the office for an optional 2 week postpartum visit, and again at 6-8 weeks after the birth. We are available to you by phone 24 hours a day throughout your pregnancy and postpartum period, and make additional office or home visits as needed.
